Centre for Initiative and Development (CFID) continues its mission to fight viral hepatitis across Nigeria through the Gilead Sciences ALL4LIVER Grant funded project, titled, āPartnerships to provide Viral Hepatitis Awareness, Triple Elimination and Relinking diagnosed untreated individuals to care in Nigeria.ā
This impactful intervention, implemented across 10 states in six geopolitical zones, strengthens healthcare systems and promotes community health through capacity building and innovative outreach. The initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health’s viral hepatitis prevention program (NASCP), state ministries of health in the intervention states, and advisory partners such as the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) and the Hepatitis B Foundation.
Healthcare Worker Training: Building Expertise for Impact
As part of the project, CFID supported an extensive training for healthcare workers at selected secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities in intervention states: Adamawa, Kaduna, Imo, Kano, Nasarawa, Lagos, Delta, Taraba, Plateau and Zamfara. The training sessions aim to equip healthcare workers with the knowledge and tools to provide quality EMTCT interventions, ensuring safer pregnancies and healthier futures for both mothers and children.
By strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers, CFID is advancing the WHO’s Triple Elimination Strategy and ensuring that HBV prevention and treatment are prioritized in maternal and child health care delivery.
Additionally, a key component of the trainings focuses on relinking diagnosed but untreated individuals to care. It equips healthcare workers, NGOs and community workers with the skills to:
- Counsel patients on treatment adherence.
- Track and re-engage patients who have dropped out of care.
- Integrate relinking strategies into EMTCT services to ensure continuity of care.
By bridging gaps in care, CFID improves retention and ensures timely access to life-saving treatments for hepatitis patients.
Community Testing and Education: Reaching the Underserved
CFID organized free viral hepatitis B and C testing and education initiatives at target healthcare facilities and community outreaches as part of activities to commemorate World Hepatitis Day 2024 and World Hepatitis Testing Week 2024. These efforts focus on raising awareness, encouraging early detection, and linking individuals to care.
Activities include screenings at selected communities in intervention LGAs in Taraba state, testing at the Taraba State Military Base, and Nigeria Correctional Centre in Jalingo. Through these interventions, CFID ensures that even the most vulnerable populations have access to life-saving care and information.
Providing Essential Care
In addition to testing, CFID provides the Tenofovir prophylaxis to HBV-positive pregnant women attending antenatal care in one of the intervention health facilities: General Hospital in Gembu. The intervention significantly reduces the risk of mother-to-child transmission, safeguarding the health of future generations.
CFID remains committed to fighting viral hepatitis through education, prevention, and treatment. Stay connected to learn more about our programs and how you can support this initiative.
