Every year on October 24, the global health community comes together to commemorate World Polio Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing efforts to eradicate one of the world’s most crippling diseases: polio.
At the Centre for Initiative and Development (CFID) Taraba, this day serves as both a reminder and a renewal of our commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind in the fight against preventable diseases.
Polio, a highly infectious viral disease that mainly affects children under five, once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year. Thanks to decades of global collaboration, relentless vaccination campaigns, and strong health systems, polio cases have decreased by over 99%. Yet, as long as the virus exists anywhere, every child remains at risk.
Honouring the Heroes Behind the Progress
This year, CFID Taraba joins the world in celebrating the unsung heroes — frontline health workers, volunteers, and community leaders — whose tireless efforts continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Their resilience and dedication ensure that vaccines reach even the most remote communities, protecting children and giving families hope for a healthier tomorrow.
Nigeria’s Progress and Ongoing Vigilance
Nigeria was declared free of wild poliovirus in 2020 — a milestone that demonstrated the power of unity, science, and determination. However, the fight is not over. The country continues to face challenges from vaccine-derived poliovirus, which makes sustained vaccination, surveillance, and awareness critical to maintaining progress.
CFID Taraba remains actively involved in strengthening local health systems, supporting vaccination drives, and advocating for continued investment in immunization. Our work emphasizes inclusion, ensuring that even the most underserved communities in Taraba State benefit from lifesaving health services.
A Call to Action
As we mark World Polio Day 2025, CFID Taraba echoes the global call to action — “End Polio Now.”
We urge communities, parents, and policymakers to keep vaccination a top priority. Every vaccine given is a step closer to a polio-free world.
Together, we can transform the lessons of the past into a lasting legacy of health and hope.
Let’s keep our promise — a world where every child grows up free from polio.
